Governors – Further Information

Co-opted governors:

Mrs Gillian Hayward (Chair)
Gillian joined the governing body in 2006 and has been Chair since 2008. She is also Chair of Gloucestershire Schools’ Forum which advises on the allocation of funds. Previously she was Chair of Amberley Ridge Special School and Hillesley Primary School where she lives . Two of her three children are currently pupils at KLBS. Prior to becoming a fulltime volunteer, Gillian was a Management Consultant working with large businesses on corporate improvement programmes.

Foundation Governors:

Mrs Margaret Clarke
In 1985, as Chair of KLB PTA, Margaret was encouraged to stand and was elected for the one of the new positions of parent governor, when the school was first allowed to have parent governors. Then in 1989 she became an LEA governor and in 1994 a Foundation Governor and a Trustee of the Foundation. Margaret was Chair of the governing body for 10 years and is currently Chair of the KLBS Foundation.

Dr John Cordwell
John joined the governing body in 1981 and has served both as chair and vice-chair. He is a Trustee of the Foundation. He has been county councillor for the Wotton-under-Edge electoral division since 1981 and a Wotton town councillor since 1979. Following a career in the nuclear power industry he became a school inspector for Ofsted, later copy-editing and carrying out quality assurance checks on school inspection reports. Since then he has undertaken other editing work, including school science textbooks.

Mr Carl Jenner
Carl joined the governing body in June 2014. He works as an accountant for Magnox Ltd based at Berkeley. He has extensive experience in financial planning, budgetary control and cost forecasting and has been heavily involved in the project teams for three major financial system implementations during his thirty year career. Until joining the governing body at KLB he had also served as a  governor at a local primary school for over fourteen years. Carl is married and lives in Wotton-under-Edge and all three of his children attended KLB.

Mr Ian Trayling
Ian re-joined for a second term in December 2014 having previously served as a Parent Governor then as a Trustee of the Foundation from the period 2004 to 2010. Educated at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in North London and moved to Gloucestershire 30 years ago. Has been involved in commerce all working life and specifically in the electronic security industry for over 20 years, currently in a role as a Corporate Sales Director. He lives in Wotton with his family who have a long association with the school.

Ms Rachel Robinson
Rachel joined the governing body in September 2012. She works in the health and social care sector and has worked in local government, higher education and the voluntary sector, and brings experience of safeguarding children and young people to the governor role. Rachel has lived in Wotton under Edge since 2004 and has a daughter at the school.

Parent governors:

Mr Chris Sanders
Chris joined the governing body March 2009 and has been Vice Chair for two years. He also chairs the Teaching and Learning Committee. Chris’s three children are reaping the benefits from being at KLB. The elder two have moved on through University to jobs; the youngest is at KLB now. Chris works developing collaboration and innovation for Rolls-Royce across our growing global village. Over the past 30 years worked predominantly on international aerospace programmes in varying management roles from engineering through to contracts, marketing and IT.

Mr Dominic Driver
Dom is married with two children at the school and lives in Wotton under Edge. After an initial career as a secondary school teacher, he left teaching to plant trees. In his tree career he has worked for the Woodland Trust; a pressure group called TirCoed; Forestry Commission Wales; Scotland and now England.

Staff governors:

Mr Andrew Harris
Andrew started his teaching career in a large 11-16 comprehensive school in Basingstoke.  He moved to an 11-18 comprehensive in the London Borough of Sutton where he was Head of Mathematics and also a teacher governor.  He then moved to Clevedon School as a Deputy Headteacher before joining the Governing Body at KLB when he was appointed as Headteacher in 1998.  Andrew has two children, a daughter in Year 8 and a son in Year 11, who attend a comprehensive school in North Somerset.

Ms Nimali de Silva
Nimali started her career on the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) programme where she spent two years teaching English in Japanese school. She then worked as a programme officer at the Japan Foundation London Language Centre, supporting teachers of Japanese in the UK. She also volunteered as a Learning Mentor with the Wandsworth schools mentoring programme, which was such an inspiring experience she decided to make the transition into teaching. Nimali is in her tenth year of teaching at Katharine Lady Berkeley’s, and in that time has been Head of Japanese, run many overseas visits and exchanges and is now the Key Stage 3 Pastoral Assistant and school-based mentor for MFL for the Bristol University PGCE course.

Mr Alastair Farwell
Alastair became a KLB Governor in October 2015 having previously been a Governor at Rangeworthy Primary School. Having originally Graduated from Swansea University in Mechanical Engineering and gained Chartered Engineer status, he initially worked in the design and development of car seat belt systems. Following this he then moved into a Department for Transport agency providing automotive product and management system certification services around the world. With a growing young family he then moved into Central Government as a DfT Business Design Manager looking at improving customer services within the main DfT Agencies. Alastair’s two boys attended KLB School, with the eldest now at university and the youngest in Year 11. He lives locally in Kingswood and is the Facilities Manager at the school looking after the grounds, buildings, catering, H&S and capital improvement works.
