At the County round of the National Schools Badminton Tournament, held in Stroud last week, the KLB Key Stage 3 and 4 girls teams once again showed their quality.
At KS4, the team of Elissa Duffner, Naomi Culpepper, Pip Eames and Danisa Golkiewiczova won their first two matches 4-1 and 5-0, against Wyedean and Deer Park, and then lost narrowly to High School for Girls 2-3, setting up a crucial match against old rivals Balcarras. This went down to the wire with all balanced on the last game. Sadly the girls lost 2-3 and came a very creditable 3rd overall, also gaining the Teamwork Award and the Honesty Award for Naomi.
At KS3, Peggy-Sue Philips, Jenny Tofts, Lexi Burdis and Elodie Sparrow got off to a great start winning 5-0 against Deer Park, then edging a win against High School for Girls 3-2. A win against Wyedean 5-0 set up the final match against Cheltenham Ladies College. At 1-2 it looked worrying, but two great wins in the cross-over doubles saw a triumphant KLB side sweep the board and go through to the Regional round in March. Jenny, Year 7, was also awarded the Passion Certificate for her outstanding singles contribution.
Many thanks go to Cath Chevin and Sharon Bates for their support on the day.
