Year 12 English Essay Competition, 2016-17
We are delighted that Enzo Bavetta (Year 12) has received a commendation in this year’s prestigious Christopher Marlowe English Essay Competition run by Corpus Christi College in Cambridge.
There were over 200 entries for the English Essay Competition and the standard was extremely high. The marker was very enthusiastic about the quality of the entrants and in consequence chose 25 essays for mention.
From a range of possible titles that allow students to explore texts and develop arguments unconstrained by exam criteria, Enzo chose to write about what he found new and innovative in Chuck Palahniuk’s 1996 novel Fight Club. The essay is an interesting and wide-ranging discussion of the way in which Palahniuk draws on his literary antecedents in the American tradition to create something that is both generically and stylistically transformed. The breadth and depth of Enzo’s frame of reference here is impressive, as is the fluency and sophistication of his discussion; it is easy to see why he was commended for his work.
