A group of Sixth Form students recently attended the regional launch event for this year’s CanSat competition.
Although high winds made it impossible to launch the satellites, the day was still packed with activity. Teams participated in a rockets masterclass where they learned advanced techniques in rocket construction and flight dynamics. They also received detailed feedback on their satellite designs from industry experts, helping them refine and improve their projects for future launches.
This year’s teams have taken on some bold challenges. Peas-of designed a satellite that would disperse seeds during its descent. Their aim is to explore methods of reforestation and ecological restoration through low-cost satellite deployments. Space-Y focused on precision landing. They built a parafoil system intended to control the satellite’s direction in flight and guide it to a specific landing site. This approach reflects real-world challenges in payload recovery and targeted deliveries.
Despite the weather setback, the teams left the event inspired and ready to take their projects to the next level. Their creativity, technical skills, and problem-solving abilities were on full display. We look forward to seeing how they build on this experience for the next phase of the competition.
