Physical Education

Vision

Our high-quality physical education curriculum aims to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. Overall, our broad and balanced PE curriculum can develop a range of life skills and values.

Key Stage 3

Sequencing in Physical Education
Through a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum, Physical Education aims to provide students with the skills, understanding, desire and confidence to engage and achieve in a wide variety of physical activities both during their time at KLB and throughout life. The curriculum will ensure that students are able to be physically active for sustained periods of time, with opportunities to engage in competitive sports and activities and lead healthy, active lives. The physical activity offer at KLB is further enhanced by an extensive extra-curricular programme, which allows students to take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs.

Year 7
During year 7 we introduce students to a variety of different sports and physical activities focusing on development of three key areas (Head, Heart and Hands). Students will explore a range of core fundamental skills developing their technique (Hands) including passing, receiving, footwork and striking, which will provide a secure foundation and build confidence for future learning. They are taught the basic principles of game play (Head) including rules and safety when performing. Students will develop movement, shape and balance through gymnastic and dance based activities. Students will be taught to understand the importance of sportsmanship (Heart) and enjoying sport or activity for its own sake. We will explore the importance of respect and resilience and their personal role in developing a positive and safe learning environment.

Year 8
In Year 8 we will continue develop the key principles of game play and understanding of sport specific skills (Hands). This will include more advanced skills being performed under increasing pressure, and the teaching of a wider scope of skills such as range and variety of passes, shots and movement. Students will be challenged to make more complex decisions (Head) when under increasing amounts of pressure in small sided games exploring the use of a range of tactics and strategies. Problem solving tasks will develop students’ decision-making skills, considering ‘why’ rather than ‘how’ we perform skills. They will be given greater accountability for their own learning. Students will improve communication and feedback skills (Heart) and enhance their wider understanding of physical activity.

Year 9
The focus of year 9 physical education is to develop students’ leadership and organisational skills. Students will be given greater accountability (Heart) for their own learning and the responsibility for leading others. Scenario based game play (Head) and games for understanding will foster teamwork skills, encouraging students to share responsibilities and recognise others for their efforts. Increasingly more complex sport specfic skills (Hands) are taught and the focus is the application in full game/performances, exploring variation in depth, timing and pace of movement. Students will also analyse the impact of them on performance. During year 9 students will be introduced to some key theoretical concepts that will enhance their understanding of sport and exercise, this will include; the principles of training, simple anatomy of the body and an introduction to energy sytems and how they are affected by exercise. This will support them as they become more independent in their learning at KS4 and support lifelong participation.

Key Stage 4

During KS4 we aim to encourage greater independence and personal responsibility. They will get involved in a range of activities that develops personal fitness and promotes an active, healthy lifestyle. The focus at KS4 is to give the students the tools and motivation for lifelong participation in sport. Students are encouraged to build on and apply the leadership skills developed in year 9 to plan and lead others. Students will have greater responsibility for the activities they take part in. Performances and game play will typically be full sporting context (Head) and require students to plan tactics and strategies and to take more ownership for evaluating their performances. The curriculum in years 10 and 11 is more fluid to best meet the needs of the learning, with pathway options which include games, individual activities and creative options.

GCSE Physical Education
The theory part of the course is externally examined and is where you will learn about the factors that affect participation and performance such as motivation, skill and the respiratory system. You will investigate the relationship between health, fitness and physical activity in terms of training methods, diet and drugs. You will also learn about injuries in sport and their prevention and treatment.

Practically you will be assessed across a number of different sports and your grading in four of these sports will count towards your final grade. You can be assessed in activities studied in core PE lessons, in enrichment and for some students, sports pursued outside of school.
