We recommend that 20% of students in years 7, 8 and 9 opt for Extra English rather than a second foreign language.
Extra English focuses on developing reading – a key skill for future success at GCSE and beyond. Our work is guided by research by the Education Endowment Fund (EEF) which concluded that students using this approach make moderate to high levels of progress in reading accuracy and comprehension meta-cognition.
We choose our texts to support the themes and language of identity and conflict; these two concepts are the golden threads running through our year 7 to 13 programme.
