I had the pleasure of accompanying 13 Year 10 students to the UWE Bristol Girls in Tech Day. The event was engaging and inspiring, encouraging students to be curious about technology and to explore potential future careers in this sector.
Throughout the day, students took part in four hands-on activities:
- Cryptography (HP): students used Caesar ciphers to write and decode messages.
- AI Ethics (UWE Digital Learning Team): students explored ethical issues surrounding artificial intelligence and discussed how values can be built into technology.
- Digital Escape Rooms (Gemba Advantage): students worked collaboratively under pressure, testing ideas and learning from mistakes to solve challenges themed around topics such as quantum physics and cyber security.
- Games Design (UWE Games Technology): students designed their own games during a small “game jam”, responding to a stimulus word to shape the theme, task, and goal, before playing and giving feedback on games created by third-year undergraduates.
The students were fantastic throughout the day, showing high levels of enthusiasm and engagement in every session. I hope to run this visit again in the future to provide more opportunities for our young women to explore pathways into STEM.
