Headteacher’s Update: Friday 7th January 2022

Dear Parents and Carers

It has been great to have all year groups back in school today. The day has felt purposeful and the students I have spoken to are genuinely pleased to be back! We have approximately 20 students who have not returned having tested positive and we currently have five staff absent with Covid.

May I thank you for your patience and support as we tested almost 700 students over the last couple of days. Four of these students were identified as carrying the virus. Following an on-site test, the advice is to follow this up with a home test 3 to 5 days later. You may have read in the press about a shortage of testing kits but, as a school, we aim to provide a box of tests for all students next week. As soon as they arrive, we will plan to distribute via tutor groups.

Recent updates from the NHS/DFE have included a change to the isolation requirement for close contacts. If your child is identified as a close contact, he/she should test daily for a period of seven days during which time he/she can continue to come to school. Please simply email hometestresults@klbschool.org.uk if you need further test kits for this purpose and we will make them available for pick up.

Please note that from Tuesday 11 January, students do not need a confirmatory PCR test following a positive LFD test. The self-isolation period for people who record a positive test result for Covid has been reduced to seven days in most circumstances. Note that the start of isolation is from the date of the start of symptoms or the date of a positive test. Individuals may now take LFD tests on day 6 and day 7 of their self-isolation period and, if negative, and they no longer have a high temperature, can return to school on day 8. Please confirm this with our attendance team in advance of returning.

Previously we have asked parents to report the results of their home tests to the school via the link in the student section of our website. From today there is no need to use this system but please do report any positive test results to attendance@klbschool.org.uk

Over recent days we have received a number of enquiries around Covid vaccinations in school. These will be taking place in school but we wait to hear from the local vaccination service on the timings and will update you when we know more. In the meantime, if you wish to get this at the earliest opportunity, you can book vaccinations for your child, if aged 12 or over, through the NHS booking system.

We ask politely that parents do not currently come to reception to drop off items for their children. With the current high rates of Covid, we need to minimise interactions and the possibility of transmission. Clearly, essential items required for medical purposes would be an exception. Thank you for your understanding.

Apologies for the rather ‘covid-heavy’ email, I do hope you have a good weekend.

Yours faithfully
