On Monday 11 November, the KLB School community commemorated the service and other personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. In a solemn and moving ceremony, Alice Bailey, Head Girl, and Jacob Bray, Head Boy, accompanied by four year 11 ambassadors (Imogen James, Evie Ryall, Dan Sadler and Lily Wharin), walked through the site to the open central area where students and staff were gathered. This year, Andrew Covell, the school’s Chair of Trustees, and members of the Kier Construction team who are leading the school’s re-build programme joined KLB staff and students.
Two members of the Sixth Form Leadership Team, Mia McMath and Lily Fox, read The Exhortation and Gemma Pearse in year 9 played the Last Post. Across the school two minutes silence was observed. Gemma then played The Reveille and Ross O’Donnell, year 11 ambassador read The Epitaph.
The ceremony closed with the chamber choir singing a rendition of For the Fallen. Alice and Jacob placed the wreath by the Wellicome board in the history building which names past KLB students who lost their lives in the two World Wars.
On Sunday, representatives of KLB stood proudly with the wider community to honour the fallen of Wotton in the town’s commemoration in St Mary’s Church and at the War Memorial. Many KLB students were present, representing organisations including scouts, guides and cadets.
Hannah Khan, Headteacher, said: “The importance of remembrance continues to resonate with our students; this poignant ceremony underlined the deep respect they have for those who have lost their lives to past and recent conflict, and the students were clearly moved by the significance and solemnity of the ceremony. It was particularly poignant for those students who had travelled to the Battlefields last summer and laid a wreath at the grave of Mr Wellicome at Mailly Wood Cemetery in France.”
