Talking in Confidence

We are incredibly proud of our Talking In Confidence (TIC) mentoring programme here at KLB. Our Sixth Formers embrace the opportunity to be trained and to support younger pupils, who benefit hugely from being able to talk to someone.
Talking in Confidence (TIC)

• Are you feeling fed up?
• Are you having problems in school?
• Are you having problems at home?
• Maybe you have fallen out with your friends or get angry or upset for no obvious reason.
• Do you feel that no one understands you?

Why talk to a TIC buddy?

T.I.C. is a group of friendly 6th Form students who are very good at listening. You can tell them anything and they won’t be shocked and more importantly they won’t laugh at you. They will keep your secrets and won’t even say hi to you in the corridor if you don’t want them to!!

Talking to TIC

There are a number of ways you can talk to T.I.C.

• T.I.C. run a drop-in centre in T4 (the Trust building) at lunchtimes where you can just pop in unannounced. You can go every day, once a week or just as a one-off. It is up to you.
• Mrs Daniel (she is also an English teacher) can arrange for you to meet someone from T.I.C. during a registration when you don’t have an assembly.
•If you don’t know who Mrs Daniel is, you can always ask Miss Khan, your tutor or your head of year to arrange it for you.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What sorts of problems do people go to T.I.C to talk about?
You can talk to someone from T.I.C about anything that might be making you feel upset or fed up. The problems that some people have talked about are:

• Bullying
• Arguments with friends
• Bad home life
• Parents who have split up, divorced, remarried
• Arguments with Stepparents and Stepbrothers and Sisters
• Drugs
• Sexuality
• Feeling alone
• Worries about appearance
• Problems with teachers
• School pressures with exams and schoolwork

Will the person I talk to understand me?
The person you talk to from T.I.C. may not have experienced the exact feelings you are going through but they may have come pretty close.

Regardless, all the members of T.I.C. are kind and caring and have had to go through a selection process. They will do their best to put you at ease and they will understand where you are coming from.

Will the T.I.C person I speak to tell my tutor or my mum and dad that I have spoken to them?
• Not if you don’t want them to. They will keep your secrets to the point of ignoring you if you want them to! They will only have to tell a teacher if they are concerned about you and are worried about you and your situation. If this happens they would speak to you first and go with you to let a teacher like your Head of Year, tutor, Miss Khan or Mrs Daniel, know what was upsetting you.

Could I go with a friend?
Of course you can if that makes you feel happier and less worried about meeting the T.I.C. friend for the first time. When you feel comfortable (after one or two visits) it is best that you go on your own.

How long can I see someone for?
It is up to you! You might only want to talk to someone once or twice and that’s fine. If you wanted to talk to someone for longer you could – T.I.C. is here to help you feel better for as long as you need them.
