U13 West Regional Hockey Champions 2022

Sport

The squad played began their day in a very cautious manner managing well any pre-tournament nerves. As the pool games came the boys confidence and assertiveness grew, posting excellent results against Mount’s Bay, Exeter School and Kingswood (Bath). A reward for topping their group was a quarter final draw against Mount Kelly. The boys clinical hockey and determination proved to be too much for our opposition and the squad progressed into a semi-final against Bristol Grammar School. At the start of the year we met our semi-final opposition in the Independent Schools Hockey Cup and went down to a 7-4 loss, the squad were motivated to give a better account of themselves this time, they certainly did! In dramatic style the squad progressed to the final after winning with the last hit of the game. The emotion displayed by the squad showed just how much this result meant. Onto the final, Dumpton School awaited along with a potential place at National Finals. The squad produced a composed performance to win the Regional Championship and qualify for the National Finals, to be held on May 6th 2022.

The recovery of our hockey programme from Covid has been nothing short of incredible. It is a testament to the dedication and commitment that our students have for school sport. The U13 boys have had an incredible season and there is no doubt they will represent the school, the county and the west region with tremendously at National Finals.

Usually we would ask players to nominate their player of the tournament. I took the unusual approach by awarding every member player of the day, to help emphasise and celebrate the complete team performance.
