Did you know that bananas are radioactive? If you eat around one million bananas, the potassium they contain could make you glow! Christopher Edge, award-winning author, recently visited KLB and revealed to students in years 7 and 8 that this fascinating fact was the inspiration for him to write a book. He also held a creative writing workshop and talked to a group of students about how to become a writer.

Christopher focused on his latest book, The Escape Room, and posed riddles for the students to solve so that they could get out of the room alive! The lively talks kept the students on their toes and even the teachers got involved in trying to decipher the riddles.

During lunchtime, Christopher signed copies of The Escape Room for the students, talked to them about his experiences as writer, and asked about their interests.

Christopher commented on how impressed he was with the students’ engagement and behaviour throughout the day: “KLB School was a joy to visit and I will definitely recommend it to other authors. The school has a great atmosphere and ethos which you feel as you walk around and I was so impressed by the students’ engagement and levels of excitement in my authors talks and sessions. This is how an author visit should be run – everything was superbly organised!”

It was pleasure to have Christopher at KLB and we are sure he has sparked interest in even the most reluctant readers and maybe inspired a few students to become writers themselves.

Reading for pleasure is part of KLB’s whole-school focus around reading. We also offer peer-on-peer support through our prefect reading scheme and have just signed up for the Gloucestershire’s Read for Good’s 1 Million Minutes Challenge. Let’s all get reading!
